ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – 24th August, 2020…….Repair work will commence on Monday on the Keeling Point Pier in St. John’s, following its collapse a few days ago.
Cabinet a few months ago made a decision to refurbish the pier used by fisherfolk in the Greenbay, Donnovans and Hatton communities which was in need of urgent repairs. Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne who toured the 5th Cruise Ship pier in St, John’s, a few miles from the Keeling Point Pier, said that due to the COVID crisis and other related issues, repairs to the pier were delayed, however he has secured the services of Meridian Construction Limited to carry out the work.
“It’s a matter of priority and I do accept that there were some delays due to the COVID pandemic, however that issue should have been addressed. We are now moving expeditiously to have it done and Mr. Conley Browne and his team will be mobilized to commence work on Monday,” said Prime Minister Browne.
Meanwhile, Minister for Fisheries, the Hon. Samantha Marshall echoed the sentiments of Prime Minister Browne and outlined that following the completion of the repairs, her Ministry will meet with the fisherfolk of the area to devise ways her ministry can provide assistance in the development of their craft.
Work on the pier is expected to be completed in one week.(Ends)
